Fullback®FC Siding Insulation Composition

What is it made from?
Fullback®FC is made of closed-cell, expanded polystyrene (EPS), which is 98% air and 2% plastic. Because the product is primarily comprised of air, it is an extremely efficient use of raw materials. Polystyrene is actually formed by linking together molecules of styrene monomer, which consists solely of carbon and hydrogen. Styrene occurs naturally and is found in many foods and beverages, including coffee, milk, strawberries, tomatoes, olives and nuts.

How is it made?
Pentane is used to blow polystyrene into its final lightweight, expanded form. During the blowing process, pentane is reduced to water and carbon dioxide. Pentane has a low volatility and is created in nature when vegetable material breaks down. Pentane is not a CFC and is not harmful to the ozone layer.

Why is it safe?
EPS has been proven to be a safe compound which is highly-effective at providing thermal insulation, because air is a poor conductor of heat when trapped in the "bubble" cells of EPS and not allowed to circulate. EPS is a non toxic, safe material for building.

Check with your chosen manufacturer to learn more about the ingredients in their specific products and their manufacturing process.

A few popular ingredients in fiber cement products are sand, cement, fly ash and wood fiber pulp. Fly ash is a byproduct of burning coal and has been used as an ingredient in concrete for over 60 years. Fly ash has been used in fiber cement to replace materials that may be more energy-intensive to create, such as Portland cement. Using fly ash material can also lessen the demand for virgin materials that may require quarrying to obtain. Some fiber cement manufacturers include up to 50% fly ash in their products.
