Costly moisture damage in your wall system primarily comes from two sources:
1.) Water Vapor from Inside: The average family of four produces four to six gallons of water vapor each day through activities such as cooking and showering. That vapor has to be able to escape from your home, so moisture does not accumulate and cause problems in your walls.

Building scientists measure breathability in terms of a permeability rating, or perm rating. According to ASTM, a "Perm Rating" of 1.0 or less is consider a "significant vapor barrier." Vapor barriers provide insulation value but virtually no breathability. Other extremes, like house wraps with perm ratings of 58, breathe but provide no insulation value. Homeowners need an insulation product that slows the transfer of energy but also breathes.

2.) Bulk Water from Outside: Water from wind-driven rain and snow can enter the wall system through leaks in the build
ing envelope. Your siding needs to protect the wall from exterior sources of bulk water.
When adding insulation to your home, it is important to not create moisture concerns in the process. The building materials you choose must be designed to channel bulk water out of the wall and allow air to move through the system sufficiently, drying the wall completely. According to Craig Drumheller, Senior Energy Engineer at the NAHB Research Center, “Insulated siding provides both thermal and hygrothermal benefits in light framed wall construction. The thermal resistance of insulated siding provides a double benefit: 1) reduced heat flow in the wall assembly thereby saving energy and 2) a higher wall cavity temperature resulting in increased drying capacity. Field testing has also shown that insulated siding installed over a water resistant barrier and wood-based structural sheathing is capable of shedding bulk moisture sufficient to maintain dry conditions in the sheathing.” This performance summary came as the result of a year-long research project at the Research Center’s outdoor testing facility.
